Feedback sought on early-stage proposal for Liddesdale wind farm

The EDF Renewables UK team behind the proposal for Liddesdale wind farm, located within Wauchope Forest and Newcastleton Forest, are encouraging local people to attend upcoming community consultation events to view and provide feedback on an early-stage design proposal.

This potential 400MW onshore wind farm could power up to 231,000* homes and deliver a community benefit fund of £5,000 per megawatt of installed capacity annually to local communities.

The local community are invited to meet the project team and discuss the proposals on the following dates:

  • Wednesday 30 August, 2pm-7pm – Newcastleton Village Hall, Langholm Street, TD9 0QX
  • Thursday 31 August, 2pm-7pm – Southdean Village Hall, Hawick, TD9 8TH
  • Tuesday 5 September, 5pm-8pm – Kielder Primary School, Butteryhaugh, Hexham NE48 1HQ.

The project is in the initial stages of development, with a Scoping Report submitted to Scottish Ministers through the Energy Consents Unit in late June setting out that the development could consist of up to 80 wind turbines, with a battery storage system and solar development on the site.

All the materials on display at the in-person exhibition will also be available in a virtual exhibition on the project website at www.edf-re.uk/our-sites/liddesdale.

Andrew Bennett, Development Project Manager at EDF Renewables UK, one of the UK’s leading renewable energy developers, said: “With detailed environmental studies having been underway on site for a number of months, we are pleased to present an early-stage proposal for Liddesdale wind farm to the local community.

“These exhibition events will provide information on our approach to the project, and how we intend to develop Liddesdale wind farm in-step with local communities and the surrounding natural environment, whilst enabling Scotland to meet its net zero targets to combat climate change.

“We encourage people to come along to these upcoming events to discuss the proposals for the wind farm and provide feedback on how a renewable energy project in the local area could support local projects and aspirations. Taking on board community feedback is a key part of our approach and will be vital as we develop the project.

“Climate change, energy security and the rising costs of living are among the biggest challenges facing our society. Liddesdale wind farm will make a significant contribution to the Scottish Government’s target to reach net zero emissions by 2045 – helping to secure Scotland’s energy future and bring down costs for consumers.”
