Sundon battery storage
- Project Type: Battery storage
- Country: England
- Location: Bedfordshire
We are developing a national network of battery storage systems. We have chosen sites that are close to National Grid substations, such as our Sundon battery project. In 2019 Central Bedfordshire Council granted EDF Renewables planning permission for the development of a battery storage system on the land adjacent to Sundon substation.
We are pleased to say that construction started in July 2023. There are four key phases of the development: site mobilisation, construction, commissioning and finally grid energisation when the battery is connected to the national grid. The entire scheme of works is expected to be complete by Spring 2024.
Battery storage systems help to manage variations in renewable generation, storing surplus electricity when wind and solar power are plentiful, and releasing it when there is a shortfall, helping the electricity system remain balanced.
Once complete, the 50MW system will be able to store enough electricity to power over 100,000 homes. As a result, this area will be home to vital infrastructure that is crucial in supporting the UK in our shift towards zero and in achieving our climate targets.
